FAQs

Students usually have a lot of questions about study abroad. Here are some of the most common ones:

Why should I study abroad?
There are many benefits to going abroad, yet on average, only 15% of college students do. However, a whopping 73% of employers said study abroad experience is important when evaluating candidates for junior level positions. Additionally, skills obtained from study abroad --cross-cultural experience, strategic international understanding, interpersonal skills, and substantive content knowledge of field--are cited as the top 4 most important employee traits. Our motto is: "If you can afford to study at UNCG, you can afford to study abroad!" A semester/year abroad should cost about the same as studying at UNCG, and most students pay regular UNCG tuition and fees while abroad. Each summer and faculty-led program sets its own costs, which will vary, but do not typically require any additional UNCG tuition. Financial aid may be used for most programs, as well as grants and scholarships. Each program page has a budget tab with more information, and we explain more about the finances of going abroad in our online Study Abroad 101 course.

Not if you plan ahead! Courses taken abroad count towards your degree and can be used to fulfill credits toward a major, minor, GECs, or even a language requirement. It's important to talk to your academic advisor to see how study abroad can fit into your degree plans.

You don't have to! You may choose to study in an English-speaking country, but even in non-English speaking countries, you will likely take courses meant for international students, taught all in English. However, if language-learning is your goal, there are opportunities to study in your target language across the globe, in countries from China to Peru.

We think so! We have opportunities for all UNCG students, beginning after your first year and continuing into graduate school. To be sure you'll succeed abroad, we want you to be in good academic standing and like to see a minimum GPA of 2.75.
