UNCG Student Experiences

Rachel Mauney Rachael Mauney
Dance Major
Studied Abroad at Edith Cowan University, Australia

“Professionally, studying abroad gave me a greater understanding that there is a large and quickly developing dance world outside the US. I think it was really important for me to recognize how this industry can shift from culture to culture. Personally, it also challenged the way I think about art and my approach to making art. My best advice to dance students who are considering studying abroad is to find a program that really suits who you are, but also challenges where you'd like to be.”
Kelsey Griffith Kelsey Griffith
Nutrition Major
Studied Abroad at Universidad Catolica del Uruguay

“Studying abroad in Uruguay, I had the opportunity to make friends with people from all over the world who studied a wide range of different subjects. It challenged me to open my eyes and to get on the Internet in the mornings to read about what was going on in the world. In essence, this study abroad experience opened my mind to a whole new realm of education. I also had the opportunity to take a Community Service class, in which I helped implemented an after-school program. A part of this program was focused specifically on Nutrition. Studying abroad is an experience that you absolutely cannot receive confined to the borders of the United States.”
Jessie Hill Jessie Hill
Human Development and Family Studies Major
Studied abroad at the University of Oulu, Finland

“Studying abroad in Finland was an experience I will never forget! It has allowed me to discover different parts of the world that I may have never seen, and it has opened my eyes to a world different from the United States. I have learned what I am capable of as an individual, and I now have a clearer picture of who I am, who I want to be, and which direction I want my life to go in. I left Finland with many international friends. You never know what can happen when you go abroad, so my advice is to apply now and start dreaming about the time of your life!”
Kasey Marshall Kasey Marshall
Environmental Studies Major
Studied abroad at James Cook University, Australia

“Studying abroad has given me a new perspective on life. Having been exposed to a new culture and new interesting people from all over the world, I am much more open-minded and independent. As an Environmental Studies major, I feel like it was extremely beneficial to see environmental issues from a different country's perspective. For my specific interests in marine conservation, having hands-on experiences and courses based on the reef in Australia was a one-of-a-kind experience. My advice to ENV students considering studying abroad is to do it! Why not? This is the time.”
Carolina Ruiz Carolina Ruiz
Public Health Major
Studied abroad at Jean Moulin - Lyon 3 University, France

“For me, studying abroad in Lyon, France was the best experience I have ever had. I got to meet so many wonderful people and go to the most amazing places. Living in France really helped me look at life the way the French do. For the French, life is all about living. All you need is good food, good wine, and good friends. They don't understand why Americans spend so much time working instead of really enjoying life. As someone who is majoring in Public Health, the French lifestyle is proof to me that health is a lot more about how you feel than what you eat or do. It's impossible to not fall in love with the French and with Lyon.”
Rachel Bray Rebekah Bray
Music Major
Studied abroad at the University of Mannheim, Germany

"Studying abroad gave me the opportunity to experience music from an entirely different perspective. I was able to witness Western classical music at its origin; this helped me develop an understanding of the cultural context of the music I perform every day. The experience was incredible and invaluable to me as a working musician!"
